Guests stay with us here at Currarevagh for a multitude of reasons; perhaps on a first whirlwind tour of Ireland you only have one day to cover as much as possible. Or maybe this is a much needed escape from the Dublin grind to zone out, recuperate and do as little as possible.
So if your stay is all about relaxing ignore most of this: we have lots of space to sit back in our drawing rooms, deck chairs for when you find a hidden corner outside in the gardens, and rugs you can laze away on somewhere by the lake or in the woods.
Here at Currarevagh –
- Explore: Maps of our 180 acre estate with lots of private walks;
- Sauna: Our wood fired boathouse sauna
- Boating: Our own clinker larch boats for guests use only. Easy to row, you don’t have to go far to find a deserted island all for yourselves;
- Outboards are also available (cost is E80.00 per day and proof of experience essential)
- Fishing on the lake; see drop down menu for more info;
- Wild Swimming: there is a perfect spot for this by one of our piers. For the brave from October to March, doable in April and pleasurable from May to September. Water is crystal clear;
- Bird Watching: we have lists of birds, books and many can be spotted in this EU Special Area of Conservation; - Croquet on the lawn… most make the rules up ;
- Billiards: we have a bar billiards table, one of only 2 in Ireland. Easy to learn, highly addictive;
- Picnics: we can always make one up for you;
Locally –
- Horse riding: one centre 7kms away, they can bring the horses out here of you like or you can trek from there. Or beach riding in Connemara can also be organised;
- Cycling: can give advice on good local spins, bikes and ebikes can be arranged with some notice; - Hill Walking: lots of guidebooks and maps here for suggestions;
- Scenic Drives / ‘Tourist Routes’: we can always advise on what routes to take to cover the most in what time you have available, and suggest a few hidden, less visited spots also;
- Arts & Crafts: A good and growing local selection of unique shops and experiences;
- Pubs: a couple of good options in Oughterard with Irish Music. A visit to Keane’s at Maam for a toastie is a must;
- Beaches: Roundstone, with Dog’s Bay and Gurteen is 50 minutes;
- Scuba diving: Scuba Dive West out at Lettergesh is super;
- Golf: good 18 hole course in Oughterard, lots of other options nearby - see drop down menu;
- Lough Corrib: the beautiful, expansive unspoilt lake we are located on with a fascinating history, boreens to the water, Inchagoil Island, Cong – see drop down menu;
- Connemara: Currarevagh is located in this primary natural beauty area of Ireland and all it has to offer – see drop down menu;
- Aran Islands: again a big international attraction – see drop down menu;
- Galway City: has a huge and varied amount to offer, still with a good selection of small independent traders, just about. Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop is a must – see drop down menu;
- The Burren: 90 minutes drive but doable as a day trip
This list is not exhaustive, so if you have any particular interests just ask and we can advise.
